Disease can be cured; fate is incurable.

1. How could british left it unconquered?
they did.

<2. If conquered, why would they establish administration for it separate
from India? It is a small place which could have been ruled by Indian
Administration.>
perhaps the colonisation was complete before india was brought under.
even then in india there were rulers of so many parts ruling with
the british blessings.

3. Or, Was it colony of some other power (portgese, French, Dutch)?
When did it become independent?
""Sri Lanka's history is very interesting. It
was conquered by colonists from India about 543 B.C. Parts of the
island were taken by Portugal in 1505 and Holland in 1658. The
British captured the island in 1796. They made it a crown colony
called Ceylon in 1802. The British planted rubber trees and developed
rubber plantations there. The people of the island began governing
themselves when Sri Lanka became an independent nation in 1948, but they
were still part of the British Commonwealth. In 1972, Ceylon became
the Republic of Sri Lanka.""

""Under the command of Admiral Joris Van Spilbergen, on the 31 May 1602,
the first Dutch ships that visited Ceylon anchored off the port of
Batticaloa.
The Portuguese were from the beginning (Afonso de Albuquerque) the first
to experiment a colonisation based on colonies of Portuguese citizens
"casados". Since the Portuguese women were few, mixed marriages were
encouraged between the Portuguese and the Asians. Albuquerque tried to
create a new Portuguese nation in Asia to make up for the lack of people
from Portugal.""""This method of settlement was extremely successful. In
fact, after a century of this colonisation, in practically every outpost
of the empire, there were colonies of mixed Portuguese, that spoke
Portuguese, were catholic and were better suited to the tropical
climates than the European-born Portuguese. Thanks to this strategy, the
Portuguese succeeded in withstanding the siege of the Dutch in Ceylon
for nearly 60 years.""
