I will address part of your email here. The first half of the email
is best addressed by other list members.

Yes, they are. The notification message that is sent after 
processing an unsubscribe request asks for reasons for leaving the 
list. Almost everyone who responds to this question cites the large 
number of confrontational and argumentative messages on religion as 
the primary reason for leaving the list.

And I see a large number of unsubscribes each time such a discussion
flares up.

Not specifically but the general opinion is that they want less 
acrimonious debates.

Excellent point. Since these messages do not usually indicate
specific topics that they would like to see, it is impossible to
ask them this question.

I agree with your point here. 

This applies to everyone on the list: If anyone on the list wants 
to start discussing a specific topic, go ahead and post the message. 
You could help spark a very interesting and informational discussion.

Rajababu posted an excellent message regarding this in Nov 2000.
Let me see if I can dig up that message and re-send it.

I hope my opinions get high consideration because of my involvement
and dedication to this list and not just because I am paying the bills.
