It was quite clear that congress president will be prime minister of India. As Gandhiji told Sardar Patel not to contest against Nehru and he withdrew his nomination.
He was not at all power hungry.

I agree to what you describe. I am sorry that I got carried away.

The movie describes the national voting among Congree office
bearers. Patel had got almost all states, and almost all votes
leaving Nehru far far far behind.

It was implied that Patel was going to be elected Congress
President, who is going to become first P.M. of independent
India.

But Gandhi had his reasons (not told in the film. Can anybody
tell those?) so he asked Patel to withdraw his candidature. Patel
did not miss a blink, he immediately withdrew knowing pretty well
what all he is giving up. But he give that all up in a fraction
of a second.

Nehru became Congress President and then first P.M.
--------------------
The above was yet another instance where Gandhi messed up with
democratic procedures to make his writ rule.

The other sad incident is when Subhash Chandra Bose contested and
won congress Presidentship against Pattabhi Sitaramaiya, the
candidate supported by Gandhi.

Gandhi declared "Pattabhi ki haar meri haar hai (his defeat is my
defeat)".

There was lot of controversy and Subhash Immediately resigned the
presidentship. Pattabhi became president.

There are several moments when the country could have gone to a
completely different direction. Wonder which one would have been
better, which one worse.
--------------------
Patel did become Home Minister of India. And what all he did to
integrate India, winning over all rebellian Rajwaadaas is known
to everyone. Without him, India would not have been India as we
are seeing it today. He was indeed a great man.
------------------------
A decade earlier, there was some book, Autobiography of Maulana
Azaad whose contents were released after thirty years or so.

He also mentioned that he (Azaad) was the congress president the
previous year and, something like, if he had continued for next
year (the one described above), he would have become first P.M.
of independent India. A muslim.

So much of Pakistan for muslims' safety. Jinnah was as stinking
and dirty as dog shit in the volume of elephant shit.
