It has more monks than soldiers. And it was the last country to legalize cable TV. His Majesty King Singye Wagchuck announced the legalization of television in June 1999 on the 25th anniversary of his coronation. And doing so opened the floodgates to MTV and pro-wrestling and Baywatch. The website at http://www.pbs.org/frontlineworld/stories/bhutan/ is a companion to a TV program that explored the effects of cable TV on this remote place. There are the obvious negatives but there are some surprising positives: for eg. all the violence that they see in the outside world via BBC and CNN has made them appreciate their country even more.
