>From the SPAM-links :) posted by 'Shal

Often you worry why you start getting SPAM when you have not
given your id.

The article says that SPAMMERS send SPAM to id without knowing
whther they exist of not. thus, if they find a name nick as an
email id, they will also include nick31, nick 32, nick33 so on
and send SPAM to it.

The solution is to have a unique, complicated id which people are
not able to guess. adding a few digits/ symbols is very
effective way of having a good id, compared to a pure alphabet
id.
-------------------------------
SPAMMING is cheap, that is why it is popular.
posting SPAM causes less than a penny per id, whereas
telemarketing costs $1 per pitch, and direct mail costs 75 cents
per address.
-------------
email ids are cut from the webpages by automatic programmes and
sold. one site sells 1 million ids for $59.95, other sells a cd
having 15 million ids for $120.
------------
SPAM is named after Monty Python skit on the canned meat product

What is that?
-------------
SPAM started in 1994 when two immigration lawyers pitched their
legal services on usenet groups.
-------------
The article also mentions about a SPAMMER, TOM COWELS, whose
company makes $12 Million a year e-mailing SPAM.

To counter him, anti-spammers have posted Cowels' home address
and phone no. all over the web so that SPAM recipients can
contact
him and tell him how they feel.

Many other personal details are also listed at websites like
http://www.spamhaus.org which seek to shame bulk e-mailers into
amending their marketing ways.

A stalker has even created a website with pictures of his home,
his driving records and a pair of his photos in police records
for not non-SPAM related arrests.

Cowels says that he had to hire a prosecutor to prevent a man
from chaing his wife everywhere and taking her photos.

I find these very good ways. It is almost divine-justice.
----------------------------------
The suggestions are like this:

Avoid displaying your e-mail address in public, including in
newsgroups, chat rooms, Web sites and membership directories of
online services.

* Check a Web site's privacy policy before submitting your
address. The policy may allow the company to share your address
with third parties. Consider opting out of this provision or not
submitting your address at all.

* Consider using two e-mail addresses -- one for personal
messages, one for newsgroups and chat rooms.

* Choose a unique e-mail address. A common name such as "jdoe"
may get more spam than something like "jd51x02oe," though the
unique address may be more difficult to remember.

* Use an e-mail filter. Many service providers offer free tools
to filter out spam or channel it into a bulk e-mail folder.
Others are available for purchase.

* Report spam to the Federal Trade Commission by sending the
entire message, including the full header, to uce@ftc.gov.

* Complain to your Internet service provider's abuse desk and to
the sender's ISP.

* Be wary. Don't believe promises from strangers. Be skeptical of
moneymaking opportunities.

COULD SOMEONE PLEASE POST URL GIVING FREE FILTERS for netscape.
