ONE MORNING, my parents offered to watch my two children while I ran
errands. Before I could leave their house, my two-month-old began to cry.
For over an hour, as my parents tried to help me with my inconsolable baby,
my two-year-old followed us about, badgering us with requests to read or
play. By the time the baby settled down, my exhausted parents were more than
ready for all of us to go. As I packed up the children's things, I
remembered that I had not gone to the bank, so I asked my dad to lend me
some cash.  As we got into the car, I heard my irritated father say to my
mother, "I had to pay them $25 to leave."  "Don't worry," she quickly
replied. "It was worth every penny."
