Interestingly, what would "well read" mean?

That a person became a better human as a result? Or could read better, with
deeper understanding?

I have seen men vastly read with not ten cents worth of wisdom nor delicacy.
And then there have been people who were profound humans who never broke a
book open.

So what would "well read" mean?
