Re : [nukkad] Muslim Chief Ministers

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
We cannot command nature except by obeying her. -- Francis Bacon
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Men like Maulana Azad,

He was a PM material, not CM. But got your point. That is what I am saying.
Even capable persons of unquestionable integrity were
not let occupy the office.
------------------------------------------------
The trouble is P.M.'s post is only one and eligible candidates are always
many.
------------------------------------------------Hafeez Khan,

Who?
-----------------------------------------------
He became second Education minister of India, after the demise of the first
Education minister, Maulana azad. He also represented India at the
International Court of Justice at The Hague, Netherlands.
------------------------------------------------M.C.Chagla,

Who?
-----------------------------------------------Most secular Muslim that the
soil of India has ever produced. On 15 th Aug. 1947 Chagla became Chief
Justice of Bombay High Court, the first Indian ever to occupy the coveted
postition of chief justice of any court any where in India. Concurrently, he
also served as the vice chancellor of Bombay University. Later, he went to
U.K. as our high commissioner. There after he was posted to Washington D.C.
as our ambassador to USA as well as to Cuba and Mexico. Returning to India
he took over from Hafeez Khan, the portfolio of Education and served well
for about three years. He was always a member of our delegation to U.N.
right from 1946 and took up very strong position against Pakistan on Kashmir
issue whenever the debate was tabled by Pak supporters. It was Chagla who
thwarted all attempts of Zulfi Bhutto when he made his bombastic speech of
thousand years of war with India. Finally he became India's foreign minister
and made good efforts to bring about understanding on certain issues with
the U.S.
When he died in Mumbai, he was NOT buried, but cremated at Chandan wadi
crematorium as per his last wishes. In my matured life I had had then few
sad occassions when I could not control myself and broke down. On this one
occassion I let myself freely loose at Chandan wadi and was eventually
consoled by Mani, personal secretary of Nani Palkhiwala.
-----------------------------------------------
Sikander Bakht

Can't say. But he was indeed daring enough to remain in a vocally hindu
outfit.
-----------------------------------------------
He is a person of simple habits and secular outlook. The trouble with such
an old politician is that he does not belong to this generation. He is very
humble at heart. During Janata Govt. of Morarji Desai, he was minister for
Public Works and Housing and had visited Gulf countries on an official
visit. Since he happens to be an old time colleague of my late uncle, he had
called on me ( right, he called me at my work site ) and talked so freely
over the phone, without giving an inkling that he was a minister and I was
nobody. He is down to earth and honest, but I doubt if any body in the party
pays him much heed these days.
------------------------------------------------
were/are of high calibre and always wanted to play role at the national
level. If they wished, they could have become C.M. of their states just for
asking.

I seriously doubt that. But anyway, I know it can't be proven either way.
------------------------------------------------Afterall, it is a matter of
opinion.
---------------------------------------------
The one C.M. you missed in J & K was G.M. Shah, the brother-in law of Faruk
Abdulla. He lives a lavish life in London now a days, not bothered about the
plight of his people.

He was congress' joker to counter Farookh. When I took four from J&K, I did
include him (see "and one more")

The government has kept him in reserve, just in case something goes wrong
with both Faruk & Omar Abdulla.
Doesn't Omar have a son/ daughter?
------------------------------------------------
Omar himself is very young. His kids must be too young and schooling, way
below the prescribed age to enter active politics. In case terrorists blow
off both the Abdullas in one go, the GOI has Shah in stock !! London is too
safe for Shah.
-----------------------------------------------
P.S. Thus we had first three Muslim Education ministers. If all us are proud
of our good education, don't you think part of the credit goes to them ????
-------------------------------------------Rohit Zaveri.
