Indeed. Everyday there are reports in Malayalam Newspapers about 2-3
suicides - sometimes suicides by whole family, mother or father killing the
children and committing suicide. For every reported case there, must be more
unreported suicides. Why are Keralites more prone to suicide than others?

The reason could be that Kerala's economic development did not match its
social development. The impressive social development and huge inflow of
spendable cash from the Gulf caused increase in the aspirations of the
people, making it a consumerist state without sustainable economic
development. The mirage of prosperity led many a Keralite astray, leading to
disillusionment and eventual suicide. The trend will only increase when the
Arabs send more and more keralites back home. 

The so-called 'Gulf-wife syndrome' also may be contributing to the high
suicide rate in Kerala.
