I guess there could be loads of reasons for wanting to drink
alcohol.. including all the ones that you had mentioned ...
One other very important reason is "Peer Pressure" 
If you have a group of friends who all drink... and u all go 
out ...then lots of people take to drink so that they will 
"FIT IN" with the group... they dont "belong" as well... 

Also, another reason is that pubs generally play very good 
music ... there are lots of pubs especially in places like 
bangalore/bombay/delhi ....where people come for the 
excellent music that is played there... when such a person
goes to a  pub for the music.. he has to atleast buy himself 
a beer ...he cant sit there just for nothing listening to the 
music... so thats how lots of peple get started... and once 
started..it can become a habit... for some.
