[nukkad] 1 -SOMETHING ABOUT GD'S-1-RAJABABU

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sanity and happiness are an impossible combination.
                 - Mark Twain
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Excerpted from "The Nuts and bolts of HR and IR"-Volume 2 by Rajababu
and Nivedita, Nivraaj Publications.

Q: What are the TYPES OF GDs ?
a) Normal -
Ø A topic is given to the group.
Ø The GD coordinator and the students are asked to discuss it for duration
of 15-20 minutes.
Ø Alternatively, the students are asked to decide the topic amongst them.
Ø In either case, the students will normally be given a time of 2-3 minutes
for preparation before the GD actually starts.
Ø The students will be seated in a circular or a semi-circular pattern.

b) Case Study
Ø A printed case study is given to the group
Ø The candidates are allowed a time limit of 3-4 minutes to read and
comprehend the passage.
Ø Then the group is asked to discuss the questions based on the case study
given.
Ø Here again the students are given a time of about 20 minutes to discuss
the topic.
Ø Case studies normally pertain to standard business situations and are full
of facts and figures.
Ø The GD coordinator attempts to examine the comprehension power of a
candidate along with the communication skills.

c) Role Play
Ø A role-play type of GD is one where a situation is described
Ø Each person in the group is asked to assume a specific role in a
situation.
Ø In such cases, you must completely step into the role
Ø Your reasoning will have to be consistent with role you have assumed.
Ø The participant, in this specific case, needs to appreciate the gravity of
the situation and generate appropriate reasoning to facilitate decision
making for the group.

d) Stress GD
Ø The topics are pre-decided by the evaluator.
Ø They are abstract topics, which have to be carefully understood.
Ø The evaluators will be sternly looking at you throughout, and you will
observe hostile body language throughout.
Ø Occasionally, they would make general negative statements like; The Group
is requested not to digress. The Group is really getting nowhere, which are
intended to throw the participants off the track.
Ø They may also display questioning body language, which is specifically
focused on the certain participants.
