[nukkad] middle class..

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Taxes are not for the benefit of the taxed
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi Gang,

I first heard of the 'middle class story' when I was
watching some Indian satellite channel last Saturday.
Seeing all those mails back and forth on nukkad, I am
reminded of a few incidents which I want to share.

I met with an accident a couple of years back in
India. It was middle of the night and middle of
nowhere! Actually it was some small village on the
national highway a few kilometres away from
Ulundurpet, a small town in Tamilnadu! The accident
was bad enough though there was no loss of life (Thank
God for small mercies!!) but there was blood all over
the place. My parents were hurt and Mom was nearly
fainting. My driver was in a shocked state and did not
even know what to do. I was the only one with the mind
in slightly working condition. I was standing in the
middle of National Highway and shouting for vehicles
to stop for five full minutes or more and not a single
vehicle stopped. I guess this was because nobody
wanted to get into trouble!!! Fortunately a group of
men heading to Madras stopped to help us and we
managed to get to the nearest hospital... Later on
about a six months after this incident, my brother got
the opportunity to return the favour and save a dying
soul. He was stopped by the people standing there and
watching the show saying he would get into trouble
with the police. Thank God he knew what it meant to
save a life so he did not listen to anybody and
brought the person to hospital and saved a life!

I want to make another comment...I don't know if I
will be able to put it across the right way, but let
me give it a try atleast.

If someone known to the family walks into the house,
misbehaves with a girl who is alone in the house, how
many families complain about this to the police or
take any action. Maximum they might do is to take care
that the girl is never alone. But the person who is at
fault is never questioned, specially if it is someone
who is a senior member of the family or someone who is
in a high position or if it is someone who has helped
the family in some way or the other. When people don't
even complain and take action for incidents that
happen in their own families because 'they have enough
problems to handle and they don't want one more thing
to worry about' how do you think that people will
worry about someone who is some unknown face? Please
don't tell me this doesn't happen.

It was just a thought....

have a nice day,
-Shyami
