There are period of lent for Christians during which one is supposed to abstain from
non-veg food, but not abstinence from food as such. But there is no uniform rule as
such binding upon all Christians, it changes from sect to sect. Orthodox Christians
in Kerala is supposed to undergo lent for 50 days leading to Holy week (starting
from Hossanah and ending with Easter). However things have been so watered down now
a days that even the church openly acknowledges that the list of items to be
abstained is just meat meaning that one is free to consume fish or egg, except for
the holy week itself when the lent is to be followed strictly. To the best of my
knowledge there is no bar on sex during periods of lent.

Good question. I don't have a straight answer. Tamil Muslims vehemently stake claim
for this title and it is not uncommon to find that they have more in depth knowledge
about Tamil literature and mythologies than Islamic scriptures. They are quite proud
to talk about Thiruvalluvar and "Silapadikaram" (a Tamil classic) than say Hadith.
The best explanation I can give is their disdain for Urdu and fanatic devotion to
Tamil language (like any other so called Dravidian). They will openly express their
displeasure when asked about the Urdu connection with Indian Islam. However I'm yet
to get a firm explanation as to how Islam arrived In Tamil Nadu. The standard answer
one gets is "through Sufi saints".
