---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Beautiful young people are accidents of nature, but beautiful old people are works of art. -Eleanor Roosevelt, diplomat and writer (1884-1962) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati today met Governor Vishnu Kant Shastri and has recommended the dissolution of the UP assembly. She has however denied reports of her resignation. In a related development, BJP leader and Uttar Pradesh Urban Development Minister Lalji Tandon also met the Governor. Tandon is believed to have given a letter to Shastri conveying the decision of his party to withdraw support to the Mayawati-led government formed in May last year. Shaky alliance It has been a shaky alliance right from the start and the latest clash between the BJP and the BSP was over the Taj corridor project, where Mayawati openly demanded the resignation of Union Minister Jagmohan. However, the BJP called her bluff and Prime Minister Vajpayee himself rebuked the Chief Minister. Mayawati blinked and withdrew her demand. "We are extremely upset with the behaviour of the BSP MPs in Parliament. It is very sad," said Venkaiah Naidu, BJP President. Naidu has also called for an emergency meeting of the party on Tuesday. "The BJP has three options: to form an alternate government, to keep the Assembly in suspension or to declare elections. We will consider these options after meeting the governor and other parties. In any case, the BJP doesn't have the authority to strike an alliance with another party," he said. Tackling Maya The problem for the BJP is that the anti-Mayawati sentiment has been growing for a while now within the state unit of the party. With Lok Sabha elections next year, the BJP is eyeing the BSP's Dalit votebank. BJP leaders have also openly admitted that their alliance with Mayawati is just a political compulsion. The total number of seats in the UP assembly is 403. The BSP has 110 MLAs, the BJP has 87 and along with their allies, the BSP-led coalition has 212 MLAs. The opposition Samajwadi Party has 142 seats. This is not the first time Mayawati has taken on the BJP. Each time, she has come out stronger and in the latest game of political brinkmanship in Uttar Pradesh, Mayawati's next move will be watched closely. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
