Cookies are nothing but plain text files that store some information
regarding 
your visit to a page that can be retrieved and later used. 
I do not believe that there is any harm in keeping the cookies. One
possible 
problem is that some malicious site can try to retrieve this information
from 
your PC and if any confidential info is stored then it could fall into
the 
wrong hands.

2. they have their expiry date; but on my compu they are still retained
after 
exp dates; m i supposed to delete them manually.

Generally an expiry date of a cookie means that the next time you visit
the
same site/page that stored the cookie and if it is not beyond its expiry
date 
the site will reuse the cookie else the site will replace it with a new
cookie.
cookies generally dont delete themselves automatically.
It would not be a bad idea once in a while to delete them yourself.
