> The regular non-resident Indian gatherings would have the usual

conversations about what ailed India. And we had all the "answers". "The
problem with India is…" was how most sentences would begin. Magic wands
being swished around, thousands of miles away, safe. On our visits to India,
we would grumble about the airports and the garbage and the traffic.

The reason systems work in developed countries is because both the government
and the citizens take the trouble to set up the system and see to it that it is
functioning properly. Our government doesn't bother to setup a system, and when
it does, we leave no stones unturned on trying to get around the system. Pretty
soon, all we have is a bureaucracy and flourishing corruption and then we shake
our heads in disbelief and say the country has gone to the dogs!

As with all systems, having a few folks who are actively involved in change for
the good doesn't work simply because it simply doesn't have the critical mass
to succeed. As long as everyone keeps jumping the light, you'd be the loser if
you try to wait your turn at the signal. Same with garbage disposal on the
street, defecating or urinating in public, dumping construction material yada
yada ...

Democracy doesn't mean accountability for the politicians alone. As long as we
don't hold ourselves to a higher standard of civic sense and accountability and
demand the same from our government, no system will work for us.
