Coincidence? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- SDeo wrote: > To be really frank Rawat, > I myself donot know what this means, Will find out Sean, On reading your email, I smiled twice - first for your jumping-on-the-happy-thanksgiving-bandwagon and then for the frank confession. Rawat, if you haven't followed Anna's link and learnt about the festival, it is supposed to be a day of being grateful for all we have. It started off in the early 1600s with the then fresh immigrants from Europe surviving their first winter with the help of the natives (Red Indians/Native Americans) and throwing a party as a gesture of thanks. The gesture was towards their native neighbors as well as towards their new land. The fourth Thursday of November was established as the national Thanksgiving day by a Presidential order in late 1700s. It also marks the beginning of the holiday season that culminates in New Year's Eve. Here are some additional links: The ritual of thanksgiving in different cultures: http://www.holidays.net/thanksgiving/story.htm Details of the first thanksgiving: http://www.holidays.net/thanksgiving/pilgrims.htm Some groups observe a day of mourning on Thanksgiving.
