Kerala villagers settle temple-mosque dispute

Thiruvananthapuram: The people of Kuttikkattur, near Kozhikode, have proved
that even a vexed issue involving a temple and a mosque could be solved if
saner elements gain upper hand and hawks held at bay.

Law enforcing agencies in the area can now sit and relax as the people of
this village have taken up the task of constructing the mosque near the Sree
Lakshmi Narasinmha Temple, Kuttikkattur.

It was something unimaginable a few months ago because both the temple and
mosque committees were unrelenting in their stands. The Muslims wanted to
build a mosque while the Hindus were bent on blocking the attempt.

It all started in 1996 when the Kanthapuram faction of the Sunni Muslims
wanted to construct a mosque, where a madrassa existed before, near the
temple.

But things turned for the worse when the temple committee opposed the move,
as it believed that the presence of the mosque would create problems for the
believers who come to the temple.

Tension and passion ran high with both camps trying to marshal their
resources to further their programme.

The entire area came under the surveillance of intelligence agencies and a
police picket was set up to prevent a showdown between the two prominent
communities. The atmosphere remained tense for many years.

But Babari Masjid was not repeated here.

The Kozhikode City Police Commissioner took the initiative and brought the
warring factions across the table.

After a series of discussions the Hindus and the Muslims signed an agreement
for the construction of the mosque. The mosque committee now will not build
a multi-storey structure.

It will remove the pillars already erected for a massive mosque. The mosque
committee will not use the way to the temple for the entry to the mosque.
Both parties have also decided to drop all the cases pending in the courts.

The construction of the mosque has now become the responsibility of the
people of Kuttikkattur ... not the Muslims nor the Hindus.
