Later, Nehru practically surrendered our sovereignty when he invited Lord
Louis Mountbatten, the governor general, to preside over and chair the
meetings of his own Cabinet and the Cabinet Committee on Defence on matters
regarding the accession and the military action after Pakistan invaded
Jammu
and Kashmir. Mountbatten, basically a servant of the British Crown, did his
best to delay the decisions.

I would like to differ from the above statement. I do not challenge the
authenticity of the above lines, however this is what I know as regards the
above.
1) Mountbattens did not delay the decision for granting freedom. It was
Nehru and Gandhi who had wanted freedom as quickly as possible. (It is
reported that Gandhiji had said during quit india- Leave India to her fate,
but JUST GO!)
2) Nehru had consulted Sardar Patel while giving the reigns back to
Mountbatten. They could not handle the complete lawlessness that prevailed
during partition. Both Nehru and Patel had implored Mountbatten to delay the
freedom which he (mB) denied.
15th Aug was supposedly a very inauspicious day for freedom and all tantras
and stars were against it.
