Mumbai-Central.comWhere Mumbaikars meet |
---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Birth, life and death. Breakfast, lunch and dinner. Coincidence? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Rohit The image most mumbaikars have of the Goan is what Rohit described "more confined to the jobs of barmen, secretaries, band musicians, cooks and into tourist industry. These days they have diversified into various professions, something they learned from their Hindu compatriots in 50 years which they could not from their Portugese masters in 500 years." But tragically this is a rather blinkered view of the Goan community at large and of Goan women in particular. It would be akin to saying that the Gujrathi's are all the ppl who sit on the low stool updating the "chopda" all day long. In Goa I doubt very much that you will be able to draw parallels between Hindus and Christians and more importantly I doubt you will be able to infer what one learnt from the other, the two communities being very similar right down to the "Sosegaad" attitudes. First of all The Goan of Bombay is no comparison to the Goan of Goa, they are two different "species". On Goan women chartered accountants, I can assure you that there are more than two chartered accountants! The very simple reason being that I happen to know them personally. One of them is the daughter of a friend of mine, who incidentally is head of the department of History in a suburban college in Bombay. Both of these chartered accountants had role models of other Goan ladies who were chartered accountants in their own families. Eminent Goans in Bombay I can quote are Mario the cartoonist whose work features in Times publications. Sylvester Da Cunha of DaCunha advertising who started the Amul ad campaign and also a front runner of the Bombay theater scene (Do I hear Bharat Dabholkar? Bharat is an employee who headed teh campaign started by Sylvester or so my information goes). The late Dr Ernest Borges for many years Director of Tata Cancer after whom the road in front of the hospital is named is a Goan from near Mapsa. His daughter Dr Anita Borges incidentally is the current head of Surgical Pathology at the Tata Cancer hospital. Frank Moraes for many years the Editor of The Indian Express and acknowledged by many to be the best Newspaper writer India ever produced and his son Dom Moraes. What of Charles Correa India's greatest architect? or Remo Fernandes? What u see in Bombay is usually third or fourth generation Goan transplanted here and mainly located in places like Dhobi Talao, Mazagoan, Byculla and the like. They generally have a minimal education dictated by economic situation more than anything else and found work on ocean going liners as cooks stewards and the like.
