======> Blake's doctrine is like ' vast gospel of liberty ' and he himself
is called 'the prince of spiritual revolt '. His poetry is highly
symbolical. So any attempt at "generally accepted" interpretation, I think,
is in vain. In this, as well as in most cases of poetic writings. As far as
poetry is concerned, there are as many interpretations as readers. Or
perhaps even more, as one reader may interpret one poetic piece differently
depending on their mood and emotional state at the moment of reading.
Depending also on life experience which is always somewhere in the
background, even if we wish it were not...

I would never dare say what the author meant by his lines. I can only say
what I personally see in them. And here I see a metaphor of birth and growth
of independent self. Which is a painful process - that is why tears, but
also rewarding - that is why heart's delight. The result is strenghth and
independence - that is why the angel returns in vain.

There certainly may be different interpretations and it would be interesting
to read them.

 Angel, The
 by: William Blake

  I dreamt a dream! What can it mean?
  And that I was a maiden Queen
  Guarded by an Angel mild:
  Witless woe was ne'er beguiled!

  And I wept both night and day,
  And he wiped my tears away;
  And I wept both day and night,
  And hid from him my heart's delight.

  So he took his wings, and fled;
  Then the morn blushed rosy red.
  I dried my tears, and armed my fears
  With ten-thousand shields and spears.

  Soon my Angel came again;
  I was armed, he came in vain;
  For the time of youth was fled,
  And grey hairs were on my head.
