---------------------------------------------------------------------------- We ought not to treat living creatures like shoes or household belongings, which when worn with use we throw away. -Plutarch, biographer (c. 46-120) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Farooq wrote: How could anyone possibly make such a statement , unless out of sheer ignorance . No religion or even a sane person will legitimize ill-treatment to anyone , let alone , of women ! ============== I have an English Translation of Quran approved by the Islamic University of Madina. I hope that is sufficient authority for you. I quote from Quran : Sura 7 Verse 189: It is He who created you from a single person (Adam) and then he created from him his wife (Eve)IN ORDER THAT HE MIGHT ENJOY THE PLEASURE OF LIVING WITH HER......... Sura 2 Verse 223 : Your wives are a tilth for you, so go to your tilth when and how you will and send for your own selves beforehand. Sura 4 Verse 34: Men are the protection and maintainers of women, BECAUSE ALLAH HAS MADE ONE OF THEM TO EXCEL THE OTHER and because they spend to support them from their means. Therefore the righteous women are devotedly obedient to Allah and to their husband and guard in the husband's absence what Allah orders them to guard. As to those women on whose part you see ill-conduct, admonish them (first), next refuse to share their bed and last BEAT THEM, but if they return to obedience, seek not against them means of annoyance. Sura 2 Verse 282 says that two female witnesses can substitute one male witness "so that if one of them errs, the other can remind her". Note that this second corroborative witness is not required for male witnesses. Sura 2 Verse 230 prohibts remarriage to divorced wife unless she marries another man and second man also divorces her. Sura 24 Verse 31 and Sura 33 Verse 59 explicitly instruct that women should wear viel that exposes only her eyes. Sura 4 Verse 3 permits a man to have upto 4 wives with no corresponding right to woman. Man can divorce a woman by simple talaq but no such simple means to a woman who wants to escape beatings of her husband. Sura 2 Verse 241 says: And for divorced women maintenance should be provided on reasonable scale. This is a duty on Al muttaqun (the pious). In spite of this edict in Quran, Muslim Ulema in India protested against Supreme court verdict in shah bano case. Why? Are husbands not expected to be pious towards their ex-wives? Rajiv Gandhi believed that the parents of the girl should be pious towards her and if they too fail, the pious wakf board is there always! WHEREVER QURAN FAVOURS MEN, IT IS FOLLOWED; WHERE THERE IS SOMETHING FAVOURING WOMEN, IT IS IGNORED, is it so? Protest against Shah bano verdict implies that. Mr. Farooq, still you say that I say this in ignorance? What does the above mentioned verses mean? Give me your interpretation if you think my interpretation is wrong. I agree that Islam exhorts men to treat woman well but it is like an order to treat subordinates / slaves well. Overall, it regards woman as having been created for pleasure of men. I have read the English translation of Quran and appreciate & respect its contents except those relating to Jehad and some verses condemning women to subordinate status. In reply to Sai, you mentioned that anybody can choose religion. True of most religions except Islam. Can a muslim convert to christianity publicly and survive? There are specific instructions in Quran that those who follow the path of Allah and later denounce it, are worse than disbelievers. Mr. Farooq, you really do not have the freedom you preach. Your enthusiasm in coming to the defence of your faith is appreciated. But before accusing others of ignorance, please look inwards and do it truthfully.
