Isn't this true for all religious leaders? The Pope is not
elected by the general public nor is there any voting for the
Shankaracharya. All such religious leaders are so far removed
from the general public that it is pointless to view them as
representing the views of the public. 

And since these positions are usually for life, there is no way
to choose new leaders.

There have been many instances when people of a religion disagree
with the statements of their religious leaders. The problem is that
the media, the politicians and the rest of us choose to give more 
importance to the saying of a single person who is quite irrelevant 
in the larger scheme of things than to the feelings and statements 
of millions of people.

Democracy and religious institutions don't mix. This is true for
all faiths. Singling out Islam taints your overall argument.
