 [nukkad] Resonse to Dr MCG's statement

 MCG wrote...
......The fourth line has to be interpreted in conformity with the theme of the first three. It might mean something like: “Thus, women are not really fully free/independent at any time and need support and
protection from others. That is OK.

Ravi replied:

1. I am sorry but i do find that rather hypocritical. To interpret one line of a sloka you seek shelter of teh other three.

2. The only difference in teh way Islam and Hinduism treat their women is one has a book with a written code and teh others have it etched in tehir mind
==================================================================
1. There is no hypocricy. We are talking here of law regarding women in Hindu scriptures. There is a specific vast subject called legislative interpretation. It is a well known rule of interpretation of law that a phrase or sentence is not dissected from the whole but rather the construction of the statute has to be such that the meaning has to be culled out of the context.
2. What you imply is probably that the muslims have a written code but the Hindus have it etched in their mind. If so, you are absolutely wrong. The Hindus have it all etched in black and white in the form of laws passed by the parliament, including Hindu personal law which has all been codified. The muslims have it all in their mind because firstly, they have refused steadfastly to let their personal law be codified or to accept uniform civil code; secondly, whenever there is a question of interpretation of Quran, they keep on saying that the version quoted cannot be relied upon because the original is in arabic which most muslims do not understand. [That is why codification is necessary].
