[nukkad] Obituary and Epitaph- A contest.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
I wish our clever young poets would remember my homely definitions of
prose and poetry; that is, prose, - words in their best order; poetry, - the
best words in their best order. -Samuel Taylor Coleridge, poet (1772-1834)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Nukkies,

( btw, we should have some sort of consensus as to whether nukkies,
nukkadwasis or nukkadites is the best term...a snap poll perhaps?)
( Nukkies is my choice... but the difference between it and " Nukes " is
very fine, lol!!)

I once read a humorous account of Sardar Khushwant Singh; in it, he
describes how he sent news of his ' sudden demise' to his residence and
neighbors as an exercise to see what they did on learning of his ' death'.

KS arrives the next day at his own house and witnesses a sort of funeral
service where his family and his neighbors are grieving and discussing their
departed member with each other.

He is astonished that there are more remarks critical of him than laudatory.
He is disguised, and joins a small group and adds some negative statements
to that group to fuel their thinking. They are unremitting in their solid
criticism of him, and are astonished when he removes the disguise and
reveals himself.

It made for a laugh, and also , introspection.

Here then, is the exercise for all of you:

Write a 25 line obituary and a 4 line epitaph of yourself as your a)
father/mother b)employer and c) wife/girlfriend were to write it for you.
A lengthy but very useful exercise in introspection.
Send them to me at my e-mail address.
The best entry will get ......??
( Maybe a gift, if you are in Mumbai or nearby)
(Otherwise, roses and kisses, e-cards and such other prizes).
Last date: Before you really die...ha ha...
actually, the last date is 15 th January 2003.

So, sharpen your pens... er... fingers, and type on!

-Taher.
