Well Rawatjee you are talking about OCR (optical character Recognition)
software...

The Office XP comes with the feature built in... capable of doing what
you said and at times more... (depends how one uses it)

And the technology is pretty old 

If am not wrong OCR coupled with MCR (Magnetic Character Recognition)
have been around for decades in banks for electronic check clearing...
also recently OCR's have been deployed for correcting/evaluating
entrance exams... in India...
