could you describe the basic concept behind them. I meam,
can it build a font file, it i once mark areas and "tell" it
about all the letters?

not that. In those, the characters are written in a standard
format. Suppose I take a novel, say, gonewith the wind, scan
that, and feed the jpeg pages to these software, would it
convert that to editable text file?
