Perhaps it's because drinking milk, and eating cottage cheese and yoghurt, is an indication of a good all-round diet. A decade-long study finds that overweight young people who drink a lot of milk are less likely to develop insulin resistance syndrome, a forerunner of diabetes and a condition that increases the risk of heart attack and stroke, reports HealthScoutNews. Among the more than 3 000 people aged 18 to 30 who were followed for 10 years, those who consumed the most dairy products had a 72% lower incidence of insulin resistance syndrome than those with the lowest intake. This held true only for overweight young adults. In this study, led by Mark A Pereira, an epidemiologist at Boston Children's Hospital and Harvard Medical School, US, people were defined as being overweight if they had a body mass index (BMI) of 25 or over. Insulin resistance syndrome means high blood pressure, glucose intolerance, and a bad blood lipid profile high in dangerous triglycerides and low in helpful high-density lipoproteins. Milk intake has decreased and cooldrink intake increased over the past 30 years in the US. Children who drink a lot of fizzy canned drinks, consume less milk and have a worse diet, with fewer fruits, grains and whole-grain products. "The sugars contained in milk are complex, very different from the sugars in candy. They are converted to blood sugar at a lower rate," says Pereira. Milk is more filling than fizzy drinks because it contains a lot of useful protein, so people who drink milk are less likely to eat too much because the milk is more filling. One downside is the fat in whole milk. This can be overcome by eating a couple of servings of reduced-fat dairy products a day. In an eggshell The scare over the past few years that eggs increase cholesterol, may, in fact, be unfounded. US research now shows that a compound in eggs called phospholid stops most of the cholesterol from being absorbed. If you have no family history of heart disease, you should be okay with one or two eggs a day. They're an excellent source of protein, vitamins A, E, B6, B12 and folate (which, in itself, lowers the risk of heart disease). Wheatgrass juice - the latest buzzword in nutrition Try a tot of wheatgrass juice for a surge of energy and a load of liquid oxygen, vitamins, minerals, trace elements, enzymes and amino acids. Immediately absorbed into the bloodstream, a 25ml tot of freshly squeezed wheatgrass (to be drunk within 15 minutes), has the nutritional value of more than a kilogram of spinach or broccoli. It enriches the blood, calming the nervous system and reducing fatigue; ensures efficient metabolism; stabilises blood sugar levels; aids in the detoxification of cells; boosts the immune system; fights free radicals and carcinogens; and prevents the DNA in genes from changing, preventing ageing. Crunch your way to whiter teeth Chomping on cucumbers, carrots, celery and artichokes will lighten your teeth naturally. Chewing on these hard vegetables increases saliva production. This flushes out colour-staining bacteria and covers the teeth in a film of moisture, preventing new stains from taking hold, reports Dr Lana Rozenberg, founder of the Rozenberg Dental Day Spa in New York City, US. - Longevity Magazine ________________________________________________________________ Sign Up for Juno Platinum Internet Access Today Only $9.95 per month!
