---------------------------------------------------------------------------- It's a shallow life that doesn't give a person a few scars. -Garrison Keillor, radio host and author (1942- ) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- zaverirm wrote: > Towards the last days in prison awaiting execution, Bhagat Singh had taken to like Gandhiji's method That was good conclusion. > Gandhiji had many differences with Subhash. Why? > Gandhi's will prevailed and Nehru was declared Congress president much against the majority vote which was in favour of Bose. Subhash had contested against Pattabhi Sitaramaiya. Gandhi had declared his support to Pattabhi yet Subhash won. Ganghi ji declared that "The defeat of Pattabhi is my defeat". Everybody had second thoughts and to keep up with the general mood Pattabhi was declared president. Then Subhash left Congress. > I have a tale to relate how Bose, disguised as wealthy frontier Pathan, travelled from Bombay to Peshawar I have read that. In fact he was in captivity of Britain. He went on 21 day upavaas (fast) or something and did not meet anybody. In fact it was to grow his beard and mustaches. Then he escaped. > Nehru never had any power struggle whatsoever with Maulana Azad. Azad was never a candidate for any important ministry. Nor his academic or intellectual or mass appeal background warranted it. Mass appeal was not of a criteria in congress, as Patel would have scored hands down. > With Patel, Nehru had differences, in fact many, not so much over the problems of princely states (except Kashmir), but largely over his constant appeasing of Muslims, during the terrible days of post-independence. I think Nehru never had his independent view, he was just reflecting Gandhi ji's views. Hindu-muslim unity was the passion of Gandhi ji whihc Nehru just followed. > Patel was the kind of man who really did not care for the power or position but cared only for the end results. In order to achieve what was best for India, he could have willingly offered his resignation at any minute and on demand. In fact, he actually did that. When Gandhi asked him to withdraw his claim to congress presidentship and let Nehru be crowned. > It is impossible that Patel wanted to wrest power from Nehru by any means. I did not imply that at all. > Nor he ever bothered to push his sons/daughters into his shoes. For that matter, it will be intersting to know how much push Nehru extended to Indira Gandhi. As for as I know, Indira was nowhere in the scene till Nehru was alive. After Shashtri succeeded him, Indira got a small ministry. It was After Shashtri's demise that Indira became P.M. > This is against Gujarati people's temperament. Not a single chief minister of Gujarat down from Jivraj Mehta until today (and there have been almost a dozen) has shown lowliness to canvas for his offspring. Nor Narendra Modi will do. Patel and Narendra Modi in the same paragraph. Boy! you know how to stir passions. > I will revert after a few days, since tomorrow morning I have to rush to the airport early in the morning and the packing chores are yet to be done.........and no wife here to ease it out for me! bom voyage. -Rawat ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ To join/leave, use the form at: http://www.mumbai-central.com/nukkad/#options This list is archived at: http://www.mumbai-central.com/nukkad/archive.html
