>From what I remember, they had diametrically opposite views on
how India should help Britain in WW I. Subhash Chandra Bose wanted
assurances and concessions from the British before sending Indian
soldiers to fight on Britain's behalf whereas Gandhiji wanted
to help unconditionally.

There were probably other factors but this is where the rift began.

Bose could not digest the idea of supporting Britain in its fight
without asking for anything in return. This was also the seed in
his plan to start the Indian National Army which fought against
the British in WW II.

I would also like to see some unbiased material about the
independance struggle. There are some excellent books by
non-Indian authors - I have read/heard a lot of praise for
Stanley Wolpert's books - but some of them are banned in India.

Successive governments have treated our leaders as fragile
trinkets - as if any close scrutiny would harm them. Sure,
they may lose some of their untarnished lustre but they will
emerge as more human than before. It will also provide good,
factual information instead of half-truths and distorted history.
