The software would'nt have to do it if people would understand
the significance of the 'subject' field. It is a title for the
message, a short introduction that tells me what the email is
about. An email with no subject is very rude. It tells me
nothing about the email, expecting me to open it and read it
to find out. If the sender couldn't spend a couple of seconds
typing the subject, why should I bother reading it?

Your point about command emails is well taken but I am certain
that such emails make up about 2-4% of the total emails you send.

I don't think so. The only way to do this would be to copy
the contents of the folder and then paste them in a blank
document. But when you copy a file from within Windows
Explorer, it copies the entire file, not the name. You could
copy each individual file name (Select a file, Choose File->Rename,
Edit->Copy, Hit 'Esc', Edit->Paste in the document) but it
is too labourious. The single command in the DOS window
is much easier and quicker.

Sure. You will need to have shell access (i.e. an interactive
login) on the server to run the 'unzip' program. Once you
transfer the zip file to the right directory, login to the
server and unzip the file to re-created your text files.

I don't use NS for newsgroups but there must be an option
to force the program to re-download specific articles. Check
the online Help and/or the menu items for hints.

I thought it might be possible to use a different key for 'help'
but it doesn't seem so. I couldn't find a way to tell Windows
to use some other key, like F10, as a shortcut for 'help'.

Esc and F1 are quite well-separated on my keyboard. I don't think
I have ever hit F1 when I meant Esc (having said this, I will
probably do this a dozen times in the next few days). F1 and F2
are close to each other but I hardly ever use either key so
the proximity does not bother me.

You have a couple of options:

- get a new keyboard which has ample separation between Esc and F1

- look for alternate key stroke sequences to F2 in the application where
you use F2 most frequently. for eg. in MS Word, Ctrl+C is the same
as Shift+f2 (copy text).

- if clippy bothers you so much, physically remove the F1 key. You can
always invoke him by using Alt+H.
