Re : [nukkad] Gandhiji & others

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
God has no religion. -Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (1869-1948)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rohit Zaveri wrote: Jawaharlal had his special ways to get things done
through others while
keeping himself free from public eyes. And he found such willing men.
When TTK was exposed in first stock market scam involving 18 crores in 1956,
it was through Govind Vallabh Pant that Paditji conveyed to TTK to resign
from the portfolio. When Krisna Menon was indicted in Jeep scandal after the
debacle of Chinese invasion, it was someone else through whom he demanded
Menon to resign.

# If he found other people to do his dirty work, it just shows his
management style. I wouldn't say it is an undesirable trait for a PM.

At least Nehru removed the tainted Ministers. These days PMs do not remove
tainted ministers and if at all they are forced to resign, PMs take them
back in Cabinet without waiting for enquiry commissions to exonerate them.
-------------
Rohit: Similarly when there was a serious railway accident, Nehru made
Shashtri
resign as Railway Minister, this time through Kamraj Nadar, the then
Congress
president.

# Here you are being unfair to Shastri. Shastri resigned voluntarily on his
own initiative after the Rail accident, owning constructive responsibility.
In fact, he set a precedent with which most ministers were uncomfortable,
during the sixties. Not the later day ministers, though.
----------------------------
Rohit: It was Shashtri through whom Nehru appointed Indira as minister of I
& B.
It hardly matters whether she assumed office before or after his demise in
1964.

# Shastri became PM a good 2 months after Nehru's death. Gulzarilal Nanda
was the interim PM for those 2-3 months. Nehru could not have anticipated
that he is going to die soon and that Shastri will succeed him. I fail to
understand how he could have prevailed upon Shastri to appoint Indira as
Minister of I & B. May be Shastri wanted to honour Nehru's memory by
including his daughter in the Cabinet. One can hardly fault Nehru for that.

I am no admirer of Nehru. But it is not right to find fault with everything
he did. He had serious deficiencies (he bungled Kashmir, he was father of
all psecs..), but nepotism was the least serious of all. He may have pushed
his daughter's political career, but not overtly. As later events proved,
his daughter was quite capable of pushing herself.
---------------------
Rohit: His daughter too was no different. She had huge funds collected
through L.N.
Mishra, A.R.Antulay, Nagarwala etc. while keeping herself in the hind sight.

# His daughter was very different from Nehru. She was brazen but Nehru was
subtle. Just compare the way they pushed their progeny's political career.
---------------------
Rohit: The politically naive public of Hindustan in those days accepted all
such
cheap tactics on their face value !!

# Why only 'in those days'? The public of Hindustan continue to be
politically naive in accepting cheap tactics of politicians of all hues.
