Dear Praveen,

Welcome to the list as a new entrant.

Hope the following helps. Best of luck.

=====================
HOW TO IMPROVE COMMUNICATION SKILLS?

1. What Abraham Lincoln did was to go to the woods and talk to the trees as if they were the audience. He was a lousy speaker earlier. He turned into a great orator.

2. A standard advice is to stand in front of mirror and practice.

3. Try talking to a small group or a single friend,and get his feed back.

4. Know your subject well. Then, as you talk to others, speak with confidence, thinking they know less than you; but do not be proud or arrogant.

5. In interviews, communication skills and manners are as important as knowledge. If you do not know the answer, say I am sorry I have not reviewed the topic recently: please ask something else.

6. Ask a friend, preferably a known senior person [teacher, a relative working in an office], to give you a mock interview.

7. Write down questions and answers to a few questions that might be expected to be asked. Rehearse them.

8. An advice by a known oratot/counsellor in US was that the thing to be done immediately prior to going in for the interview is to go to the bathroom. [To ease oneself, if needed; to clear one's throat; to have a look in the mirror; to have a sip of water].

Many of the above suggestions I have tried and found useful. I have been a professor and have no problem speaking. I was extremely speaking-shy in school/college.

Get hold of Dale Carnegie's books. They are interesting and useful. I think he wrote a book on public speaking also.

I am sending a copy of this mail to the list also for general usefulness to others.

PS: About call centre jobs, I do not know much, but I know one thing: every job gives you not only salary but experience, which might be even more important than the salary. So go ahead and do whatever job is available rather than be without job. Only thing to beware is that the job should not be illegal, immoral, demeaning or, otherwise, a bad career move.
