Dear Praveen,
As someone who is self-employed, I know considerably less about sitting on
the other side of the table. Still, having conducted a number of interviews,
I know something about what's expected in an interview. Note these points
while going for an inteview:
1. You are not alone who wants to give just the right answers, the
interviewer equally wants that.
2. Take your time. You know, some of the quickest typists don't get very
high typing rates because they keep on doing mistakes. People are more wary
of wrong interpretation or judgement than of the time it takes to make it.
3. Re-phrase the question. It is always a good practice to rephrase the
question which has been asked of you. Not only it helps you in better
understanding the question, but also lets the interviewer know that you are
going in the right direction. It will also gain empathy for you from the
other person(s). Don't do that again and again for the same question,
though. It will just annoy the interviewer.
Now, to your specific query regarding communication skills. I would say, the
best way is to sit in front of the mirror and speak to yourself. you may
also record what you said. See, where you falter, and correct those
problems. To initially gain confidence, you may grab your favorite book,
read lines from it.
Mock interviews can also help, but make sure the person knows what it is all
about, with whom you are having this mock interview.
One undeniable law for speaking well is to believe in yourself. Having a
high self-esteem would make it much easier for you to speak in front of the
interviewer, than if you were in doubt. Remember--how you are much more
comfortable with yourself in front of those whom you think to be equal or
inferior to you? To this end, always make it a point to dress well.
Grab a copy of any book on communication, that will help. In the end, how
you communicate depends on how you feel. So, try to be comfortable in an
interview. For that, you must always prepare for it. Ultimately, it comes
only after hard work.
Hope it helps.
Regards,
Pankaj Gupta
