About 1911 when George Panchma, George V, as he was called, came to throne. With him came the devalued one anna, the sign of the times, there being anna coins of more venerable stature such as the 2 anna one, which was largely silver. The 1 anna carried, alas, copper and fickle nickel, and tended to buy less and less as the years progressed more and more to the times when the country would, in the first breath of freedom, be fractured into two. With that the anna also lost face and carried the oddest obverse and reverse impression, on both sides of the Indus, possibly from the same die etched with the newer chisel of fervor. In time the open ended paisa faded into the gloom of the dust of ill decades, and was replaced by the mangled, unpronounceable 'paise'. The anna? In time, they could not afford even the cheap nickel, and began to coat recycled cardboard :-) with some waste plastic, and called it the anna, which everyone knew it was not. At one time 4 anna coins could have bought a brunch of sorts with free tea accompanying, and a seat at a marble topped table under a roof. In its last breath, if you gave it to a beggar person, it was likely to be thrown at you, with disdain to accompany.
