You can't compare India to Yugoslavia!
In contrast to India "Yugoslavia" never was a "native" State. It was
nothing but an artificial conglomerate of several religious and cultural
different ethnities, mainly Serbia, Croatia, Slowenia, none of them ever before
really independed for longer periods.
The last Turkish conquerors fled the Balcan in 1912/13 and with the murder of
Austria-Hungarian heir apparent FranzFerdinand in Sarajevo in 1914 WW I broke
out.During WW I it was Serbias effort to unite Serbian, Croatian and Slowenian
people.
On December, 1st 1918 Serbian Prince Alexander Karadjordjevi´c founded the
"Kingdom of Serbia,Croatia and Slowenia", he was pronounced King of this
Kingdom in 1921. Amongst the then 13 000 000 inhabitants of this kingdom lived
german and hungarian minorities in the north and albanian and turkish
minorities in the south. Difficulties soon arose due to the fact that
Croatians and Slowenians didn't agree to the centralistic intentions of the
Serbians, secondly the cultural and religious differences between the orthodox
balcanian (eastern) Serbians and the more western, roman catholic Croatians
caused troubles. The parties splitted more and more so that in 1929 the royal
parliament was turned into a dictatory regime. In 1931 Alexander set up a new
authoritarian constitution and pronounced the "Kingdom of Yugoslawia".
King Alexander was killed in 1934 in Marseille. His successor was Prince Paul
Karadjordjevi´c who's prime minister signed the renunciation contratc.Macedonia
was no longer part of Yugoslawia. In 1939 Croatia received authonomy and a
free elected parliamanet.
With the beginning of WW II the Kingdom of Yugoslawia collapsed and it was
divided between Italy, Germany, Hungary, Bulgaria, Albania, a so called
"Independend State of Croatia", Montenegro and Serbia. All memebers of the
royal Yugoslavian Government had fled to their London excile.
In 1942 leader of the partisans, Tito, founded an "Antifascistic Government of
National Independence" that replaced the excile government. The western
governments accepted this.
On November, 29th 1945 a constitutional assembly pronounced the "Republic of
Yugoslavia" with Tito as the first Prime Minister.
In January 1946 the new constitution was passed. Serbia, Croatia, Slowenia,
Bosnia-Herzogovina, Macedonia and Montenegro were members of the "Federal
Peoples Republic of Yugoslawia". Each of them with an own additional
constituion.
In 1948 the communistic leaders of Yugoslawia dissociated themselves from
Sowjetunion and in 1953 Tito was declared President after an alteration of the
constitution. As Rohit already mentioned he governed as a totalistic dictator.
He died in 1980.
After Tito's death the artificial construction splitted more and more as the
different ethnities strove for authonomy and independence. The riots grew and
grew until the fights became war.
Due to international supports some of them soon succeeded in becoming
independend, others struggled much longer - until today, when Kosovo became
independed from Serbia.
