I had sent out this message from the Economist a few months back
but I just received a couple of 'Boycott Economist' chain letters.
The protests are in regard to a maps in a screensaver from the 
Economist's website. This is the response from the Economist.

Thank you for your message about The Economist Screensaver and the
India-Pakistan border. Can I first assure you that the map on the previous
screen saver did show Kashmir correctly marked in India.   The previous
screen saver was on site for some time before a user incorrectly mailed
that we had moved the border.  I am sorry that this false information has
been circulated and caused such unnecessary distress.  

We had letters of apology from the originators months ago but sadly this
has not filtered through and the chains of mails have suddenly started to
reappear.    The previous saver stored demographic country information in
circular modules  so if a user clicked near a border the neighbours
information would pop up - it was not unique to India/Pakistan - we DID NOT
MOVE KASHMIR - the borders were in the right place and the way the saver
operated was explained in the download instructions.

The saver was replaced months ago so that information was not contained in
circular modules to eliminate the demographic information of a neighbour
appearing - as simple as that.
   
 You have asked several people to contact me,  I would therefore be
grateful if you could contact them now with this mail.  Can you also
contact the sender of the mail you received so that no further
misinformation is circulated around. 

We would ask people to check the facts for themselves now before sending
out mails which do cause needless anxiety and propagate information that is
not correct.

I have tried to reply as courteously as possible to mails that are patently
incorrect as I appreciate that at such a fraught time this type of
misinformation causes distress - please can you ensure that you do help
stop an incorrect chain going around the net.    The saver works in the
spirit of the net providing free information on every major country and I
do suggest again that you do check things out for yourself before sending
mails around.
