Basically both are different ways of doing the same thing. That is checking
e-mail using a e-mail client instead of Usual webmail. POP is PostOffice Protocol
3 AKA POP3. It is a little older but nerthless very much popular. IMAP4 is
Internet Message Access Protocol 4 This is relaatively Newer protocol Not as yet
widely implemented. But it is gaining wider acceptance due to its feature rich
usage.PO3 basically brings all your e-mails from mail server to your pc and stores
there. Whereas IMAP let's you read and send mails from the server itself. Very
much like Telnet to mail server. But a lot preetier. Also Since it does not store
anything locally on your pc, you are not bound to one pc and can very much use any
pc to acess your mail. But not all mail servers let you store your mails there due
to space constraints.

POP3 is best useful in a office environment where you are very much using one pc
all the time. and there are space constraints. But where as the Internet mails
are concerned One would love to use Imap as you can't and don't want to be bound
to one pc . But they usually don't support it for space constraints.

    Hope this helps.
