I'm sure there are interesting reasons for the names of regions of Greater
Mumbai, too!

Well, at least I know some of those. Churchgate is obvious. The various
*devi's are named after the godesses of local temples. Pydhonie, I have
heard, is where people washed their feet before entering the Fort through
Church Gate or one of the other gates.

Probably. The rest are, of course, names of local villages which grew into
suburbs.

Santa Cruz and Vile Parle (Ville Parle?) look like Portuguese names.
Bandra is actually "Vandre", otherwise I would say it comes from 'bunder'
or 'dock'.
