RE: [nukkad] Trivia on taxes-Rajababu

Tip of the day: "It is well to remember that the entire universe, with
one trifling exception, is composed of others." -- John Andrew Holmes

>a) Bachelor Tax Did you know that being a bachelor was an expensive
proposition (no pun intended) in the seventeenth century? In 1695, the
English law levied a tax on bachelors. Then, it seemed like a good idea to
inspire eligible
Englishmen to choose a bride and thereby increase population, though
logically there doesn't seem to be any connection. The English were not
alone; in 1820 the state of Missouri levied a one-dollar tax on bachelors
from ages twenty-one to fifty because they didn't have a wife.

Guess what? We in Ireland still pay this tax. Yep! Married people pay less
tax as they get a marriage allowance... I guess that is one good reason to
get married!

>k) Window Tax -- Peekaboo In the late 1600s, Ireland enforced a 'Window
Tax.' Homeowners were assessed according to the number of windows in their
house.

I found this funny when I first heard about it. I was out in the Irish
country side when someone told me how windows were actually boarded up
because people wanted to avoid paying window tax. I guess this is what they
call "daylight robbery" :-)

Thanks,
