Re: [nukkad] Arundhatis Book

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tip of the day: "It is well to remember that the entire universe, with
one trifling exception, is composed of others." -- John Andrew Holmes
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks to Nelson Fernandez and Indian Rediff, about the announcement and the
review of Arundhati's book. I had a stomachful of English verbosity in
Prasannarajan's review. Sometimes I feel we in India adopt too much of a
'holier than thou' or 'more English than the english' attitude, reminiscent
of Nirad Chaudhury. To me, the review is saying that Arundhati's book is not
worth reading, being bereft of content or ideas. That single sentence,
straight forward message is more communicative than a long diatribe. Science
tells us to be brief and to the point. Social science, though labelled a
science, is certainly a very different one! [I bracket here social science
with litereary effusion; they often tend to follow similar traits].

Thanks to Nelson and Rediff again. They and others like Rohit, Raja Babu,
Ravi Menon, Netgeek etc. are some of the pillars of this list, maintaining
high its standards. [Other pillars need not mind; they are too many to be
named individually. I did get mails from dear friends in response to pawan
nandrajog's new entrant mail, reproaching me for leaving them out from my ad
hoc listing of frequent and significant contributors to the list].

P.S.: As regards admiration, I admire both writers and beauties, especially
writer beauties. Remember, a thing of beauty is a joy for ever!

And here is the reaction to that book
as reviewed in India Today dated january 7, 2002

I agree with the reviewer's sentiments, even
though I haven't read the book.
Needless to add, I am no admirer of this beauty
 of a writer.
