FILMS 2001
I needn't say that 2001 has been a very bad year for
most of us and they say that it was a bad year for the
Film Industry too, but
I don't agree with that...well if you are talking
about the trade figures, I may have to agree that it
wasn't a good year, but tell
me, which year was good in terms of business. Every
year has had it's share of hits and flops (flops have
always been more than the hits). But last year saw a
fresh tribe of film makers with new ideas and it also
proved to be a year for the "written off's". Be it
Ashutosh Govariker, Anil Sharma or Madhur Bhandarkar,
they all surprised us one after another with super
duper hits.
Last year din't prove to be a zabardast year for King
Khan, the producer. Khan (SRK) suffered losses at the
box office, his film Asoka, which was supposed to set
the screen ablaze and remind us all of Brave Heart,
turned out to be a film like than any other "Choli
Lehanga and Dhishum Dhishum film.
The year proved to be the best for Aamir Khan, who
suceeded both as an actor and producer, his home
production Lagaan, proved to be a super hit and won
the hearts of millions in India and Abroad. Coming to
his second film Dil Chahta Hai, which won him acclaim
as a versatile actor and a crowd puller.
Some good cinematic attempts also went unnoticed this
year, for eg; Chori Chori Chupke Chupke and Ehsaas.
Finally here are a few films of 2001, which I felt
were real good:
ENGLISH:
1. BRIDGET JONES'S DIARY ***** (5 Stars)
*ing: Renee Zellweger, Colin Firth and Hugh Grant.
The film, inspired by a book, talks about a single
woman in London. Renee Zellwegger plays BRIDGET with
absolute perfection and so does Colin Firth (Fever
Pitch) & Hugh Grant.
2. MUMMY RETURNS *** (3 Stars)
The film can be appreciated for the superb special
effects and the excellent music score. It did not
surpass the collections of the prequel
PEARL HARBOR was the major dissapointment, as it had
nothing new to offer in terms of story and screenplay.
HINDI
1. LAGAAN ******* (7 Stars)
*ing: Aamir Khan, Gracy Singh, Rachel Shelly and Paul
Blackthorne.
Do I need to say anything?
2. MONSOON WEDDING **** 1/2 (4 and a half)
*ing: Naseeruddin Shah, Lillete Dubey, Vasundhara Das,
Shefali Shetty and Vijay Raj.
Made within a confined budget and shot with hand held
cameras, the film was on par with Lagaan.
3. DIL CHAHTA HAI ** 1/2 (2 and a half)
*ing: Aamir Khan, Akshaye Khanna and Saif Ali Khan.
The film did well at metros, it proved that if given a
chance, Akshaye Khanna can be a brilliant
performer...and who can forget
the wonderful music.
4. GADAR - EK PREM KATHA *** (3)
*ing: Sunny Deol, Amisha Patel and Amrish Puri.
The film was the biggest hit of 2001 (collections
wise) and it was the come back film for Anil Sharma
and Sunny Deol, who had
FARZ to his credit.
TELUGU
1. NUVVU NAAKU NACHCHAAV ** 1/2 (2 and a half)
*ing: Venkatesh, Aarti Agarwal and Prakash Raj.
End of the year...and we are eagerly looking forward
to the Awards. Awards, so many of them, but which one
do we trust...
FILMFARE AWARDS...SCREEN AWARDS or the NATIONAL
AWARDS...I don't think any of them is clean...now how
can I say
that? Kabhi Khusi Kabhie Gham or K3g, which I felt is
the most preposterous film of the year 2001, will most
certainly find a slot
in the Best Film and the Best Director category.
As per me, the awards are as follows (Many of you may
not like them, but this is what my heart says, I
haven't tried to
accomodate):

GOVARIKER, ANIL SHARMA, MADHUR BHANDARKAR,
GRACY SINGH, SHANKAR-EHSAAN & LOY, VIJAY RAAZ and
SHARMAN JOSHI.
The story doesn't finish on a happy note. 10 people in
Orrisa died after eating a dead bull, a family in the
same state died one
after another, the number of days they lived, they
survived on rotten mango pulp i.e. mango seeds boiled
in water.
K3G talks of a family that travels in helicopters,
while DIL CHAHTA HAI speaks about 3 young lads, who go
around in Merc's. None of
the films released last year (except a few), spoke
about the Real India and the crisis it's going
through...Rich becoming richer and
the poor becoming poorer, growing frustration & anger
among the youth and the two major problems: POVERTY
and
LITERACY. Films, at a time, were considered to be the
strongest source of MASS COMMUNICATION, which would
bring a change
in the society, but how many films released last year,
actually give out a useful message? Only a few.
Gandhiji once said that every citizen living in a
Metro/Developed City must spend atleast a month in a
village/with the poor, trying to
reform the lives of the poor/villager, but how many
stars have done that? Shahrukh Khan? Salman Khan?
Aamir Khan? Amitabh Bachchan? No one. (Exceptions are
always there)
People keep loving CINEMA, it has now become the
source of entertainment package minus message.
