I wrote a reply to sai’s mail which was to be sent to nukkad but was, by mistake, sent to him. He replied to it but committed same mistake and sent the counter reply to me only. Then he sent me a mail asking me to post it to the list. I am doing so, accordingly, along with my comments.

Dear Dr. Gupta,

You appear to have been wanting to send this to the
Nukkad list as well as myself, but seem to have
mistakenly sent it only to me (mainly due to your
addressing me in the third person). I am sending this to
the list - and presume that I have your OK.

Back to the points to be discussed, I will discuss them
in-line.

MCG-- I am neither repelled nor fascinated. It is the
peoples' power. If the masses elect a leader in a democracy, it is not
the rise of the individual but the rise of the popular will. May
be we in India have yet to learn to respect the will of the people.

I would not comment upon the comparison with Hitler in
the article mentioned. I have not read the article. Since Sai has
read it, he may kindly inform about the following:

 1. Was Hitler democratically elected through open adult
 frnchise?

[SAI--Hitler did indeed initially ascend to power
democratically - although by the narrowest of margins.
There was one 'Putsch' that was attempted BEFORE the
democratic ascension - but that was defeated. ]

 2. If so, did he continue in power through democratic
means? [What was the tenure of the post to which he was elected?
Did he extend his own tenure or abrogate the Constitution, Musharraf
style? Were the elections rigged or voice of people and dissent
muffled? Was there free press?]

[SAI---However, once in power, he grabbed it with both hands
and had special powers made available at his disposal.
Everything that took place was democratic and within the
constitution of the time. He took those powers (which
made him effectively a dictator) and went on to fight
the powers that had demeaned Germany.

I would recommend reading the following link:
http://www.factmonster.com/ce6/people/A0858634.html
and the ones after it.]

sai---Now - what do you think of the parallels being drawn
between Modi and Hitler?

MCG---What I think is this. Hitler was a dictator, though ostensibly elected as per constitution, much like musharraf and, even Indira, who wreaked emergency on India for 2 years, all within Constitutional framework. Modi is a democratically elected popular leader in an election closely supervised by CEC and observed by many foreign observers, without any lurking doubt about unfair means. Dictators and popularly elected leaders cannot be compared.
