[nukkad] //////EDUCATION/////

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Non-violence leads to the highest ethics, which is the goal of all
evolution. Until we stop harming all other living beings, we are still
savages. -Thomas Edison, inventor (1847-1931)

Dear Anna/Nukkadwasis,

There are many well-educated people who lack the wisdom of the world: we say
in Gujarati: Bhanyo pan ganyo nahin....
These guys can tell you the 4 th root of a seven-digit number, but get
fooled by small-time tricksters.
I am one such person, and I am not proud to admit it. :-(
On the other hand, it does impart to me an " innocence " which is liked by
some of my critics/admirers.
Here, I would like to relate how I was once duped.
A rather respectably dressed man once came to my clinic and told me that he
knew me, and he could help me get Palmolein oil at a reasonable rate.( For
the outsiders, palmolein oil was being imported by the Govt. of Maharashtra
from Malaysia in the 80's to tide over a very acute shortage of groundnut
oil which we normally use for cooking, and the incident describes how the
gullible were taken for a ride by touts and tricksters). I was to pay him
Rs. 70/= per kg. as against a printed price of 55/=, when the going rate was
100-120 per kg in the black market.
I left my patients and went with him to a grocery shop. He had already taken
the money from me( 140/= for 2 kgs).. he asked me towait outside, and went
in into the crowd of customers. I waited for him to re-appear. I waited and
waited, but no sign of him. I went into the melee to search for him, and
discovered that there was a rear door in the shop.
Poor me.
I never saw him again.

Anyone has any such stories to relate?

Even if YOU were the trickster?

:-)))

With Best Wishes,
Dr. Taher Kagalwala
