Me too, for a very long time. The tyranny of geography prevents
me from being more hands-on in this quest.

I had high hopes when an Australian lady offered me slides that
she had taken during her trip to Mumbai in the 60s. Sadly, she
never replied to my email offering her suggestions on how to send
the slides.

That would be truly cool! What would be even cooler would be
to have some 'then and now' photos. Images of the same location
taken a few years apart.

On your next visit to B'bay, here are two options for you:

- Visit any newspaper office and see if they let you use their
archives. I am convinced that there is treasure trove of photos
in there but the problem is access and permission to make copies
of them.

- Visit the Asiatic library. I am not sure if they have what we
are looking for but if any place in B'bay does, they do. Also,
the vice president of Asiatic Society of Bombay (which I think is
connected to the Asiatic Library), is an avid collector of old Mumbai
postcards. The news article at
http://www.mumbai-central.com/grapevine/msg01179.html#7
describes this briefly.

I hope, fervently, that you find some of this wonderful past
of the city.

I wish more people had taken more photos in those days and
had preserved them.

Thanks,
- Harshal
