Re: [nukkad] Rand's Philosophy

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Patriotism is often an arbitrary veneration of real estate above
principles. -George Jean Nathan, author and editor (1882-1958)

I first got interested in Rand's literature when someone at my college said:
not something you should be reading, it's a brain-read. So, when I read the
my first Ayn rand Book--I think it was The Fountainhead--I read it with a
very critical eye. I didn't like her ideas. I thought, the ideas were too
abrasive and too far-fetched. The ideas were presented in a grandiose
manner, but the content itself was quite flimsy and based too much on
imagination.

Quite the opposite, I found Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell as much
more reality based. Although Mitchell lacked the eloquence shown by Rand,
her ideas were much more concrete and based on reality. This is the reason,
perhaps, one of them was a great writer and another visionary--the point
raised by Shrivastava. I wonder if anyone has compared the two writers'
works. This would make an interesting case for a literary project. I am
revisiting my Ayn Rand collection, and I should be able to present some more
thoughts when I finish reading Atlas Shrugged--her most controversial novel.
Till then.

Best,
Pankaj
