Re: [nukkad] Interesting Viewpoint (Windows 2000 Offers Better Total Cost Of Ownership Than Linux)

Inflammatory speech rarely convinces anyone, and will usually just
cause them to shut you out.

I place myself in a similar situation - though I have to admit a
certain liking for the simplicity of shell scripts and command line
access over point-and-click GUIs for systems administration purposes.

I am not a zealot for either side but think that both systems have
their strong points as well as weaknesses.

There is no doubt that Linux has made strong inroads into Microsoft's
server market but it is far from causing Microsoft to lose any sleep.

As the article noted, the biggest difference between the two is
system management tools. As this particular segment matures for
Linux, the cost differential between the two will reduce significantly.

BTW, I agree with the article that the initial cost of the software
is only a fraction of the TCO. Thus Linux's free-ness is not its most
attractive feature when it comes to enterprise solutions.

Isn't ATM still dominant in the backbone networks? I agree that it
is far from being the force it was supposed to be but I think it will
continue to be the right solution for niche markets.

Similarly, both Linux and Windows will continue to exist and
serve specific needs. Linux's main benefit is that it provides
an alternative to the Windows monopoly.
