Dear Anna,

The poem you sent is marvellous. The message is great. It is the
same universal message in all cultures:

Don't worry about the future,
Don't about the past you grieve,
You can only shape the present,
In the present you must live.

[How do you like that? Probably not bad for instant
composition!]

In a way, the same message is reflected in Que sera, sera.

When young, I debunked such thought. Why should I not worry about
the future? Why not plan it? Is there an entity called fate? If I
don't worry about future, I will never be able to develop my
career. These were the thoughts when I was young. Now, those
thoughts have mellowed. I believe now that there is something
called fate. Had there been no fate, and if I had to become a
lawyer, I could have passed LL. B. in 1964 and be in league with
Soli Sorabji or ram Jethmalani, with 40 years law practice behind
me. But, fate ensured that I become professor of medicine first
and then do not only LL.B. but LL.M. too, and be a lawyer at 59.

The message of Gita is not much different. Lord krishna says in
verse 54, chapter two:

Karmanya ev adhikaraste,
Ma phaleshu kadachina;
Ma karma phal heturbhu,
ma te sangastu akarmani.

  [Yours is to do thy task,
Without worry about result;
Nor influence its outcome,
Nor sit idle and just sulk.]

NB: The above may not be exact translation of the verse, but it
conveys the essence in my own words].
