HT, Jan 18

Jamia Millia Islamia (New Delhi) Professor of political
science Dr Zafar Ahmed Nizami and Anjuman Taraqqul-e-urdu
(New Delhi) secretary Dr Khaliq Anjum today strongly
repudiated the "generally-believed and
deliberately-perpetuated" misconception that it was poet
Iqbal who demanded the creation of Pakistan. The two
scholars instead laid the blame at the doorsteps of Lala
Lajpat Rai.

snipped.

Quoting extensively from the address that Iqbal delivered at
the 1930 convention of the Muslim League, Dr Nizami in his
paper on "Iqbal and the idea of Pakistan" demolished the
misconception. He had not even named it in his address.
Iqbal has actually demanded unification of the provinces in
the west of the country (which largely constitute Pakistan
today) "to create a strong region to defend and protest the
country from aggression from that side." he claimed.

Dr Nizami said that it was actually Lala Lajpat Rai who, six
years earlier in 1924, in three part article in "The
Tribune" floated the idea of the 'partition' of the country
between Hindus and Muslims and had clearly outlined the
regions to be given to the Muslims, including East Bengal
(that later became East Pakistan and now Bangladesh).

Pakistani leaders needed a great personality as a national
icon and Iqbal suited them perfectly, Therefore they
distorted his message, said Dr Anjum.
