True friends are those who trust me and whom I can trust too. And what is
trust here? It is certainty that one will not let the other down. What is
its source? Friendly declarations? No, it is just interaction. Declarations
are easy to make. It does not cost much to declare: 'we are so close, count
me as a friend' when one does not really mean it. So it costs equally little
just to turn one's back and forget all about it.

With true friends I may not keep in touch even for a long time, but I know
they are always there and they know the same about me, and we can count on
each other.

With true friends I have that kind of understanding that needs no words. We
may spend time together saying hardly anything and still the communication
is going on.. On the other hand we may talk endlessly and never get bored.
Even if our interests do not meet.

With true friends I feel safe, and they can feel so with me. I know that I
will not make a fool of myself if I believe them. Nor will I cause such a
feeling in them.

True friendship is not an all-roses relationship, of course. Friends do
argue, just because they do care.

Well, I might go on, but that could be at the risk of your getting  bored to
death!  : ))
